Some consider it the official mark of summer, but no matter what, Memorial Day weekend always holds a special place in the hearts of central Pennsylvanians, as it also rings in the first street festival of the year, right in downtown Harrisburg.

The 48th annual PennLive/Patriot-News Artsfest runs May 24-26 is held in Riverfront Park and is FREE for all who attend.

This three-day festival attracts more than 30,000 visitors. The streets will be crowded for Harrisburg Arts Festival this annual juried fine arts and crafts festival featuring 250 artists and craftspeople. Artsfest also boasts two food courts, two performance stages, a kids fest area and a film festival.

KIDSfest includes daily magic shows and performances from the Popcorn Hat Players Children’s Theatre.

Plus, the Central PA Friends of Jazz stage hosts three days of local jazz performers.

Artsfest runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

While you’re in town you won’t want to miss a weekend full of hometown minor league baseball! The Harrisburg Senators take on the Bowie Baysox in the weekend-long series. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Saturday, 6:30 p.m. Sunday and 2 p.m. Monday (Memorial Day).

Be sure to stick around for fireworks blasted from City Island after Sunday night’s game.

Another great way to experience the city is aboard The Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat. The Pride is one of only seven “authentic” paddlewheel riverboats remaining in the U.S., meaning it uses only the paddle wheels both for propulsion and steering. No propellers, rudders or other means — a gem in our modern world!

Public cruises run daily through the weekend. Check here for times and tickets.

Hungry? Our Capital City also boasts what we call “Restaurant Row,” which features a variety of bars, taverns and restaurants no matter what you’re craving. From classic Italian to farm-to-table, great craft beer menus, wine bars and impressive handcrafted cocktails, you can find it all with an easy walk down N. Second St. and its intersecting cross streets.
